1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-027

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1963 25¢ WDDO-027, this Philadelphia Washington quarter displays Class II doubled die obverse characteristics with a spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, slightly on the date, the designer's initials, and the ribbon bottom. Class II spreads result from a rotated hub impression, pulling design elements inward. Obverse die markers include a die scratch northeast from the upper right N of IN, short die scratches southwest to northeast below the R in LIBERTY, a strong die gouge left of the nose center, and die scratches southwest from the chin. The reverse carries two die scratches northwest from the lower left neck of the eagle, a vertical die scratch inside the U of UNITED, and a die scratch north-northeast from the top right R in QUARTER. No other cross-references are known. The 1963 Washington quarter was the penultimate year of 90% silver composition before the clad transition, making doubled die varieties from this date attractive to collectors seeking both variety interest and silver content.
