1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1963 25c WDDO-003), this 1963 Washington Quarter obverse doubled die shows a very close spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST and the L of LIBERTY — a tight inward-directed doubling consistent with a hub shifted slightly toward the die center between impressions. Obverse die markers are well documented: a die scratch runs west-southwest from the bottom of the L in LIBERTY; a die crack crosses the base of the bust into the lower queue; and a second die crack runs east-west through the upper forehead and upper hair. Reverse die markers support attribution: diagonal die scratches inside the lower R of AMERICA; a die crack down the eagle's right wing extending to the Q of QUARTER; and a die crack through the eagle's upper left wing. No cross-references to other attribution systems are known. The 1963 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia. The combined obverse and reverse die crack pattern makes this variety well suited to systematic attribution from both sides.
