1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-021

Description

Twenty-one doubled die obverses cataloged for the 1963 Washington Silver Quarter reflect the concentrated variety research applied to the final years of 90% silver quarter production. WDDO-021 shows a spread to the north on IN, the G in GOD, and the TR in TRUST — a selective northward displacement that affected only specific letters within the motto and inscription, a pattern consistent with localized hub distortion during the die production process. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the left of the upper lip, providing a quick diagnostic for initial screening, along with die scratches running SW/NE below the I in LIBERTY. Reverse markers are equally detailed: a small die gouge (dot) to the left of the O in OF and a die gouge north of the LA in DOLLAR, both persistent marks that survive across the die's full service life.
