Description

Struck in the final year of 90% silver Washington quarters, the 1963 WDDO-018 displays a nice spread towards the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, and the lower queue of Washington's hair. The Coinage Act of 1965 would end silver in circulating quarters the following year, making 1963 the last date where business strike Washington quarters contained the precious metal composition used since the series began in 1932. The obverse is richly marked with die scratches: one runs ENE from the bottom of the second T in TRUST, with numerous additional scratches found throughout the obverse field. The reverse similarly shows a die gouge above the R in QUARTER and numerous die scratches throughout, suggesting this die pair saw extensive use or rough handling during its working life. Cataloged under the Wexler designation 1963 25¢ WDDO-018, the abundance of die scratches on both sides actually aids authentication by providing multiple secondary diagnostics beyond the doubling itself. Collectors examining 1963 quarters should focus first on the TRUST lettering and date area, where the convergent Class II spread is most evident.
