1963 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

1963 WDDO-013 is a doubled die obverse on the 1963 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. The spread is clockwise (CW), pivoting from about the 12:00 position, and it shows on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the lower queue and the designer's initials. Wexler describes three stages of each die. Obverse Stage A has a short gouge heading NNE off the middle of the 3's right side. Stage B adds a die chip over the R in LIBERTY, and Stage C looks the same as Stage B. On the reverse, Stage A shows a crack linking the S in PLURIBUS with the upper left wing of the eagle; Stage B has a crack from the second U in PLURIBUS to that upper left wing; and Stage C has a crack running down the eagle's right wing. Jim Lafferty submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-O-V. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
