1963 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

1963 WDDO-008 is a doubled die obverse on the 1963 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. A spread toward the center appears on the designer's initials, the date, and the hair lines low on the back of the head. Obverse Stage A has a strong scratch heading south off the designer's initials at the S; Obverse Stage B adds a large die chip above the nostril, on the nose. Reverse Stage A is a doubled die, carried in Wexler's doubled die files as 1963 WDDR-025. Its strong counterclockwise (CCW) spread pivots at 2:00 and is strongest on UNITED and E PLU of E PLURIBUS UNUM, lighter on the dots, ONE DIME and STATES. Over US of PLURIBUS lies a series of NE/SW scratches, with fan-shaped scratches below it; a scratch runs SSW from the lower left acorn through US; and a NE scratch links the lower olive with the stem of the lower left leaves. On Reverse Stage B a gouge appears at the upper left of STATES's A and another in the field between I and C of AMERICA, nearer the rim. Every scratch at US is gone except the SSW one, which now runs only through US. Joe Feld submitted Stage A and Frank Baumann Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references.
