1963 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

1963 WDDO-007 is a doubled die obverse on the 1963 Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. A medium spread toward the center appears on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials, which are at least tripled; LIBERTY shows very light notches. On Obverse Stage A, a NNW/SSE die crack, still very light, is starting in the hair near the head's back, and a short N/S scratch sits under TRUST's R. On Obverse Stage B the crack has grown, breaking east at its bottom and running to the back of the head, and a new NW/SE crack crosses it at the top. The Stage A scratch is gone, and a SSW scratch lies low between GOD's O and D. Reverse Stage A: a large die chip sits on the upper right olive leaf, a NE/SW gouge crosses UNITED's U at the top of its right vertical bar, and a NW/SE scratch is centered inside that U. Wexler next lists Reverse Stage C, in which a die crack forms at the right side of the chip on the olive leaf and a series of scratches runs NNW from the upper right olive leaves. Frank Baumann submitted Stage A and Joe Feld Stage B. CONECA lists it as 2-O-II. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
