1963 Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-005, is a doubled die obverse on the 1963 Roosevelt dime with very strong spread on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. Both catalogs cite it as FS-101 (016) in the Cherrypickers' Guide; Wexler writes FS-10-1963-101 (016). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a very strong spread toward the center on the date, the designer's initials, IN GOD WE TRUST, the LIBE of LIBERTY, the bust and the top of the back of the head, with the last T of TRUST tripled CW, pivoting at 12:00. On the obverse a SSW scratch, forked close to its top, runs down the nose from the eyelid; light, dense NNE field scratches spread from mid-nose along the upper profile; SSW scratches connect the base of the nose to the lips; and many scratches cross IN GOD WE TRUST, including a strong SSW one from the right leg of the R of TRUST. On the reverse one light scratch runs SSW from the lower left oak leaf through the lower acorn, the second U of PLURIBUS and the torch base to the D of DIME; another runs from the M of AMERICA through the upper and lower right oak leaves and the second U of UNUM to the M of DIME. Frank Baumann submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 1-O-II+V. VarietyVista, crediting Delma K. Romines, notes the variety can be found in Mint Sets. Under its marker codes UVC-396 and DMR-003, stage A is an early die state with many scratches on both sides; stage B (a middle die state) and stage C (a late die state) are unconfirmed.
