1961-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

Discovered by Jeff Longeuay, this 1961 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime WRPM-006 features a repunched mint mark with D over D in a tilted or rotated orientation, where the secondary impression is angled relative to the primary. A north-south die scratch connecting the nose and lower lip on the obverse provides the primary diagnostic marker. The reverse carries additional markers: a light die scratch south-southwest from the lower left of the last U in PLURIBUS connecting to the torch holder, a light scratch south from the first U in UNUM, north-south scratches left of the E in STATES, and a scratch south from the left upper side of the second T in STATES. Cross-referenced as Wexler 1961-D 10-cent WRPM-006. The 1961 Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver, the traditional composition from the series' 1946 debut through the final silver year of 1964. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt portrait honors President Roosevelt's association with the March of Dimes. Rotated repunched mint marks are less common than simple directional RPMs and require careful examination to distinguish the angular displacement.
