1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-378, DMR-004, this 1961 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime carries a repunched mintmark with a D/D West orientation, where the initial D punch was placed west (to the left) of the corrected final position. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is the early die state, Stage B is an unconfirmed mid-die state, and Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The westward displacement creates a secondary D impression visible to the left of the primary mintmark, providing a directional diagnostic that separates RPM-002 from the rotated clockwise orientation of RPM-001 (UVC-377) for the same date. The unconfirmed Stages B and C await verified specimens to fully document the die's wear progression. Struck in 90% silver (0.900 fine), the 1961-D Roosevelt Dime is among the later silver-composition issues before the composition change in 1965. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt portrait had been in continuous use since 1946, and the Denver Mint continued to hand-punch mintmarks throughout this period, producing repunched varieties with various directional orientations across different working dies.
