1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-377, DMR-003, this 1961 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime displays a repunched mintmark with a D/D Rotated CW (clockwise) orientation. The initial D punch was applied at a clockwise-rotated angle before correction to the final upright position. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is the early die state, Stage B is an unconfirmed mid-die state, and Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The unconfirmed status of Stages B and C indicates that while these progression points are expected based on typical die wear patterns, specimens definitively matching those stages have not yet been verified. As RPM-001 for the 1961-D, this holds the primary catalog number among repunched mintmarks for the date. Struck in 90% silver (0.900 fine), the 1961-D Roosevelt Dime was produced during the final years of silver composition before the Coinage Act of 1965 changed the alloy to copper-nickel clad. John R. Sinnock's design was in its fifteenth year of production. The rotated clockwise orientation provides a specific diagnostic for confirming this variety.
