Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960-D 10¢ WRPM-015, this Roosevelt Silver Dime exhibits a D/D repunched mintmark with the secondary impression tilted or rotated relative to the primary — indicating the Denver Mint engraver held the mintmark punch at a slightly different angle during the correction strike, creating a rotational offset between the two D impressions rather than a simple linear displacement. Obverse die markers include east-west die scratches visible in the lower opening of the B in LIBERTY, providing a reliable identification point on the portrait side. The reverse carries multiple diagnostic features: a northwest-southeast die scratch to the left of the mintmark, a die scratch extending north from the upper left corner of the E in ONE, a northwest-southeast die scratch connecting the O in ONE to the lower right corner of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, a die scratch extending north from the E in EPU, a die scratch extending north from the lower acorn, and two short north-south die scratches connecting the N in UNUM to the oak stem. This extensive network of reverse die scratches provides an unusually comprehensive fingerprint for this specific working die. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1960-D 10¢ WRPM-015 with no additional cross-references known. The Roosevelt Silver Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock and struck at the Denver Mint in 1960 in 90% silver composition weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. The 1960-D falls within the final years of silver dime production before the 1965 composition change. The tilted repunch creates a rotational RPM signature where the D's serifs diverge at varying angles, distinguishable from straight-line directional repunching under 10x magnification.
