1960-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1960-D 10c WRPM-006 with no other known cross-references, this repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Roosevelt Dime displays a D/D tilted (rotated) repunching pattern where the mintmark was punched into the working die at least twice with a slight rotational offset between impressions. The obverse die markers are extensive: NNE to SSW die scratches appear at the profile and run through IN GOD WE TRUST, with the heaviest scratch connecting the first T in TRUST to the D of GOD, accompanied by a wavy die crack extending from the forehead easterly through the hair. On the reverse, a long die scratch runs from the left acorn to the left upper area of the M of DIME, with an additional NE to SW die scratch visible inside the lower opening of the E of DIME. These abundant die markers provide multiple independent confirmation points beyond the mintmark itself, making this variety attributable even on worn specimens where the RPM details may be softened. The 1960-D Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver (1.80 grams of actual silver content) at a total weight of 2.50 grams with an 17.9 mm diameter — part of the final years of silver dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in circulating coinage. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt obverse and torch-with-branches reverse compose this design, in continuous production since 1946. The rotated repunching creates a secondary D impression at a different angle from the primary, producing an overlapping mintmark image best examined under 10x magnification.
