Description

Showing a D/D Rotated CCW (counterclockwise) repunch, RPM-038 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-684/DMR-052. The rotational offset distinguishes this variety from the more common translational repunches where the secondary D is simply displaced in a cardinal direction. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A (EDS): obverse is EDS, numerous die scratches E-W on reverse at EDS. Stage B (MDS): obverse is MDS, three die scratches E-W above PLURIBUS at MDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The counterclockwise rotation means the mintmark punch was twisted slightly when the second impression was applied, producing a secondary D image that appears rotated relative to the primary rather than shifted linearly. Rotational repunches create a distinctive visual signature because the curved portions of the D letter show maximum separation at points farthest from the axis of rotation, while areas near the rotation center show minimal displacement. This makes rotated RPMs an interesting subclass within the broader 1960-D Large Date RPM roster.
