1960 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Large Date - SKH-1c-1960D-01(LD) Spiked Head

Description

Cataloged by CudsOnCoins as SKH-1c-1960D-01(LD) and cross-referenced to the Cohen Index as Lg60D-58A with a documentation date of August 15, 2017, this spiked head variety appears on the 1960-D Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date. A spiked head error occurs when a die crack or die break extends from the top of Lincoln's head outward, creating a raised spike or horn-like projection on struck coins. The spike forms because the crack in the die fills with metal during striking, producing a thin raised line that extends from the portrait into the surrounding field. The Cohen Index reference Lg60D-58A provides a secondary attribution source beyond the CudsOnCoins catalog. Spiked head varieties are popular among Lincoln cent error collectors because they are visually striking and relatively easy to spot under low magnification. On the 1960-D Large Date cent, the high-speed production at Denver created conditions conducive to die cracking, and cracks radiating from the high-relief portrait area were a natural consequence of the stress concentration at Lincoln's head.
