Description
From the Denver Mint, this 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent is catalog number RIDB-1c-1960D-02(LD), a retained interior die break on the obverse. The D after the year is the mint letter, (LD) denotes the Large Date, and 02 is the sequence number within the Cuds on Coins listing. With this kind of failure, a piece of the die face well inside the rim breaks away from the die but remains trapped in position, typically sinking slightly. What collectors see is a raised island of design with an abrupt step down to its surroundings. If the piece is lost from the die, later strikes show a blank raised lump instead, which is an interior die break.
