Description

Featuring both die clash evidence and a double die clash in later stages, RPM-037 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-683/DMR-051. Five die stages have been documented. Stage A (EDS): obverse and reverse are EDS. Stage B (EMDS): die scratch north from forehead at hairline, die clash shows in third bay of Memorial at EMDS. Stage C (MDS): obverse is MDS, die crack on column 1. Stage D (LMDS): obverse is LMDS, die cracks on columns 2 and 12, small die crack on right cornice, double die clash in third bay of Memorial building. Stage E: LDS (unconfirmed). The double die clash visible in the third bay at Stage D indicates the dies struck together without a planchet on at least two separate occasions, each time transferring design elements from one die to the other. Die clashes are common on high-speed production dies, but a double clash in a specific location provides an exceptionally distinctive diagnostic marker that makes Stage D specimens readily identifiable among the 1960-D Large Date RPM series.
