1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-036
Error
Description
Encompassing five die stages across two reverse die pairings, RPM-036 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-681/DMR-049 and UVC-682/DMR-050, this variety features prominent die scratches and a progressively worsening forehead crack. Under the first reverse (UVC-681/DMR-049): Stage A (EMDS): die scratches NE-SW on obverse, reverse is EMDS. Stage B (EMDS): horizontal die scratches on upper obverse, die chips on column 12 at MDS. Stage C (MDS): obverse is MDS, die crack on column 1 at LMDS, small die chip on right cornice. Stage D (LDS): die crack on forehead, die break above right cornice. After the reverse die change (UVC-682/DMR-050): Stage E (VLDS): strong die crack on forehead, reverse die changed at EDS. The strengthening of the forehead crack from light at Stage D to strong at Stage E indicates the obverse was approaching terminal failure when the second reverse was paired with it. Denver's 1960-D Large Date production generated an extraordinary number of RPM varieties because every working die received its mintmark individually by hand, creating the potential for repunching on each die manufactured.
