Description

Characterized by a triple-punched mintmark described as D/D/D East, upper serif, RPM-035 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-680/DMR-048. Five die stages trace the die's progression from early through late condition. Stage A (EDS): obverse is EDS, die cracks on columns 1, 2, 11, and 12 at EMDS, die chip on right cornice. Stage B (EMDS): obverse is EMDS, die chip on column 1 at MDS. Stage C (MDS): obverse is MDS, die chips on columns 2 and 12 at LMDS. Stage D (LDS): die scratches N-S on obverse, die scratches E-W on reverse. Stage E (LDS): small die break on upper column 12. The upper serif displacement matches the same pattern seen on RPM-025, where the top horizontal stroke of the D letterform shows the clearest evidence of the triple punch. The early onset of column cracks at Stage A — reaching EMDS on the reverse while the obverse remains at EDS — suggests the reverse die deteriorated faster than the obverse, a common pattern given the Memorial design's greater surface complexity.
