1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-032
Error
Description
Reaching nine die stages across two reverse die pairings, RPM-032 is one of the most extensively documented repunched mintmark varieties on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-675/DMR-043 and UVC-676/DMR-044, this obverse die remained in service long enough to consume two complete reverse dies. Under the first reverse (UVC-675/DMR-043): Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B (MDS): strong die scratch under IN, die gouge on top left tip of I of AMERICA, die scratch from left cornice tip through E of UNITED. Stage C (LMDS): obverse is LMDS, no die scratch through E of UNITED. Stage D (LDS): obverse is LDS, depression at right eave. Stage E (LDS): depression is stronger. After the reverse die change (UVC-676/DMR-044): Stage F (VLDS): obverse is VLDS, reverse die changed at EDS. Stage G (VLDS): die crack on columns 1 and 2, die crack on lower E of UNITED, small die chip on right cornice. Stage H (VLDS): numerous die scratches NE on obverse, depression on upper column 12 at LMDS. Stage I (VLDS): die break on upper column 12 at LDS. The disappearance of the E of UNITED scratch between Stages B and C demonstrates die polishing during production.
