Description

Progressing through three documented die stages under VarietyVista designation UVC-663/DMR-031, RPM-022 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. The relatively brief staging suggests either a shorter die service life or limited documentation to date. Stage A (EDS): obverse is EDS, die gouge left of the first U of UNUM at EDS. Stage B (EMDS): die scratches northwest on obverse, reverse is EMDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The die gouge near the first U of UNUM on the reverse provides a useful secondary diagnostic for confirming this die independent of the mintmark area. In the era before 1990, when mintmarks were hand-punched into individual working dies at the mint, each die received a unique mintmark application that could produce repunching whenever the initial placement required correction. The 1960-D Large Date cent was produced in enormous volume before the mid-year introduction of the Small Date hub, and the high-speed production operations consumed dies rapidly, which is why so many distinct RPM varieties have been cataloged for this single date and subtype combination.
