1960 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Large Date - Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Notable for displaying a triple-punched mintmark described as D/D/D west, west, RPM-004 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-641/DMR-009, this variety progresses through three documented die stages. Stage A presents both obverse and reverse in early condition, offering the clearest view of the triple-punched D before production wear begins to erode the secondary impressions. Stage B advances to a moderate condition with developing die markers. By Stage C, the die reaches its later production phase. The triple punching (D/D/D) indicates the mintmark punch was applied three times before the die maker achieved a satisfactory position — the two westward offsets suggest the initial punches were placed too far east, requiring successive corrections toward the final intended location. Collectors examining 1960-D Large Date cents for this variety should look for two secondary D impressions to the west of the primary mintmark, which may appear as extra serifs or partial letter forms depending on the die state.
