Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960-D 5¢ WRPM-005, this Jefferson Nickel documents the fifth repunched mintmark variety for the 1960 Denver Mint date. Reverse die markers include nearly vertical die scratches between the D in UNITED and the first S in STATES, along with a small die gouge between the upper A and the second T in STATES — markers positioned within the reverse inscription area where the lettering provides clear reference geometry for locating each diagnostic feature. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The die scratches between UNITED and STATES are positioned in a narrow field area where the proximity of the two words creates a confined space, making any marks within that gap particularly easy to locate and confirm. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag, with Thomas Jefferson's portrait on the obverse and Monticello on the reverse. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1960 in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter, the 1960-D had substantial production as part of the regular annual mintage. Mintmark application on Jefferson Nickels during this period remained a manual process where each working die received its D individually by hand punch at the Denver facility. The fifth cataloged RPM for the 1960-D date, alongside the related WRPM-003 also documented for the same date, demonstrates multiple mintmark misalignment events within the die population for this single year — each variety representing a distinct die that received its own imperfect mintmark application, creating unique doubled-D patterns sought by Jefferson Nickel variety specialists.
