Description

First documented cud for the 1960 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, CU-5c-1960D-01 records a die rim failure on a coin from the post-war era of American nickel production. A cud forms when a fragment of the die rim fractures and separates, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking to create a raised featureless mass at the rim of the finished coin. The 1960-D Jefferson Nickel was produced during a period of robust Denver Mint output, when nickels remained heavily used in commerce for vending machines, pay telephones, and everyday transactions.
