CU-5c-1960D-02 Cud

Description

Following closely upon the first documented cud, this second cataloged cud for the 1960 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel records an independent die rim failure from a different die than the one that produced CU-5c-1960D-01. Each cud results from a unique fracture event, and the position, size, and shape of the raised featureless area on the coin differs with each die failure depending on where along the rim the fragment separated. Two cuds from the same date indicate that multiple dies sustained rim fractures during the 1960-D production run at Denver. The Jefferson Nickel of this period carried Felix Schlag's classic portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and his Monticello estate on the reverse, a design pair that had been in continuous service since 1938. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins under CU-5c-1960D-02, this variety complements the first entry and together they document at least two separate die failures. The 1960s marked a period of heavy nickel production as the denomination played an essential role in vending machine commerce, and the high die consumption rates associated with these volumes made cud formation a recurring phenomenon.
