Eighth documented cud for the 1960 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, CU-5c-1960D-08 reveals an unusually deep concentration of die rim failures for this date. Eight cuds from a single year and mint is a substantial count, indicating that the 1960-D production run consumed enough die pairs — and subjected them to sufficient stress — that rim fractures occurred with notable frequency. A cud results from a die rim fragment breaking away, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking to produce the raised featureless mass characteristic of this error type. The jump from sequence numbers -01 and -02 to -08 suggests that additional cuds in the intermediate range have also been cataloged, pointing to a rich field for variety collectors examining 1960-D nickels.
