1959-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-330 and DMR-006, this 1959-D Roosevelt Silver Dime RPM-004 is cross-referenced as FS-502 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, confirming its significance as a variety actively sought by collectors and recognized in the standard attribution literature. The comments identify a D/D West repunch direction, meaning the initial D mintmark was placed slightly east of the intended position and the corrective westward punch left the first impression partially visible to the east of the final placement. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B in mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; and Stage C in late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The Cherrypickers' Guide FS-502 listing is particularly noteworthy because it places this variety in the most widely consulted reference for die varieties worth searching for, making it a target for both roll searchers and dealers examining Roosevelt Dimes from this date. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, and this 1959-D was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. The 1959 date is the fourteenth year of Roosevelt Dime production and falls during the final years of silver composition before the 1965 transition to clad. The D/D West displacement creates a diagnostic where the remnant first impression appears predominantly at the eastern edge of the mintmark area, with the greatest visible separation at the right curves and serifs of the D letter. The FS-502 designation elevates this variety's market recognition and collector demand beyond what the VarietyVista cataloging alone would provide.
