1955-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1955-D RPM-002 Roosevelt Silver Dime displays a D/D Rotated CCW (counterclockwise) repunched mintmark where the secondary D impression is rotated counterclockwise relative to the primary — meaning the Denver mintmark punch was held at a slightly different angle during the second application, creating an angular offset between the two overlapping D impressions. Die markers UVC-269 / DMR-003 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with the reverse at MDS and the obverse already at LDS — an unusual asymmetry where the obverse die deteriorated faster than the reverse; and Stage C with the reverse progressed to LDS and a die crack appearing in the back of the hair at VLDS, indicating extreme die deterioration. The progression from obverse-ahead deterioration in Stage B to the hair die crack at VLDS in Stage C documents how the obverse die's structural failure accelerated relative to the reverse during the later portion of this die pair's production life. The Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock and struck at the Denver Mint in 1955, composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. The counterclockwise rotational displacement produces a distinctive visual pattern where the top of the secondary D appears shifted left while the bottom appears shifted right, creating an asymmetric overlap that distinguishes this variety from the more common straight directional repunches. The 1955-D is among the final decade of 90% silver Roosevelt Dime production.
