1955-D Variety WMDO-001

Description

Denver's version of the ubiquitous 1955 doubled master die, WMDO-001 for the 1955-D Roosevelt Dime displays the same counterclockwise spread pivoting from approximately 3:00 on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the lips that appears on every 1955 Roosevelt Dime regardless of mint facility. The master die — the steel template from which all working hubs are created — received a doubled impression during its manufacture, and this doubling cascaded through every subsequent step: working hubs, working dies, and ultimately every coin struck from those dies across all three mints and proof production. Denver produced approximately 13.2 million dimes in 1955, all carrying this inherited doubling to varying degrees of visibility. Cross-referenced as CONECA: MD-1-O-V and Wexler Variety ID: 1955-D 10¢ WMDO-001, the variety's universal nature means it commands no premium over normal 1955-D dimes — an important distinction for collectors who might otherwise mistake master die doubling for the far more valuable working die doubling. Obverse and reverse die markers vary across individual working dies since only the master die doubling is constant. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this WMDO-001 completes the trio of 1955 P, D, and S mint varieties all sharing the same master die origin.
