Description

Seventh documented repunched mintmark variety for the 1954 San Francisco Mint Jefferson Nickel, WRPM-007 preserves evidence of the hand-punching process used to add mintmarks to working dies before the Mint transitioned to hubbed mintmarks in the late 1980s. During this era, a mint employee used a small steel punch to individually hammer the S mintmark into each working die destined for San Francisco, and slight misalignment between punches — or a corrective second punch — created the doubled or shifted mintmark impression that defines an RPM. The Wexler Team attributes this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1954-S 5c WRPM-007 with no known cross-references. Obverse die markers include die gouges below the ST in TRUST and below the R in LIBERTY. Reverse diagnostics feature a short nearly vertical die gouge above the mintmark, a die scratch running northeast from the steps below the mintmark, and a die gouge to the left of the T in CENTS. The 1954-S Jefferson Nickel was produced at San Francisco during the post-war era, and the seven documented RPMs for this date-mint combination reflect the inherent variability of hand-punched mintmarks across multiple working dies. Each RPM records a unique misalignment event — a moment of imprecision in the die preparation shop — frozen permanently in steel and then transferred to every coin struck from that die.
