Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler himself and cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1954-S WDDR-001, this Class II distorted hub doubled die reverse on the 1954-S Jefferson Nickel presents close doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS, with the spread increasing from left to right across all three inscriptions. This progressive left-to-right intensification is characteristic of Class II hub distortion where the warping of the hub during impression creates a displacement gradient across the die face, producing minimal offset at one side and progressively greater separation toward the opposite edge. The obverse die markers include a die scratch between the upper portion of D of GOD and W of WE, plus a die gouge in the field above Jefferson's head at the 11:00 position. The reverse carries die gouges between F of OF and A of AMERICA, along with a strong die gouge to the upper left of the dome of Monticello. As WDDR-001, this variety holds the primary doubled die reverse catalog position for the 1954-S issue, representing the most significant or earliest-documented reverse hub doubling for this date-mint combination. The 1954-S Jefferson Nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter, during the post-war era when San Francisco production supplemented Philadelphia and Denver output. Felix Schlag's design, selected through a 1938 competition, places FIVE CENTS at the bottom of the reverse where the progressive left-to-right spread reaches its maximum displacement, making the denomination inscription the strongest diagnostic checkpoint for this variety.
