1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

RPM-002 on the 1953-D Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint and catalogued by VarietyVista under die pair UVC-0823, DMR-006. The repunch is a D/D Southeast: the secondary D impression is displaced to the southeast of the final mintmark position, the ghost of the first punch visible below and to the right of the primary D. Die state progression covers two documented stages: Stage A is Early Die State. Stage B advances to a Middle Die State defined by numerous die scratches on the upper reverse — a cluster of field scratches concentrated in the upper portion of the reverse design — and the obverse concurrently reaching Middle Die State. The Washington Quarter reverse carries the heraldic eagle, and die scratches in the upper field above or near the eagle are among the most readily located reverse markers in this series.
