1953-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Recognized by both CONECA and the Cherrypickers' Guide, this strong Class I counterclockwise rotational spread on the 1953 Denver Mint Washington Quarter shows dramatic doubling on QUARTER DOLLAR, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the lower wreath. Class I doubling — the most dramatic mechanism — results from a rotational misalignment between hub and die during production, creating a spread that fans outward from the pivot point. This silver composition quarter, struck in the traditional 90% silver alloy, carries John Flanagan's classic Washington portrait. Obverse die markers include two short die gouges running southeast from the upper left of the three in the date. On the reverse, a short deep die gouge runs southwest-to-northeast in the center of the eagle's right wing, well east of the U in UNITED. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-I and Cherrypickers FS-25-1953D-801 (022.2), and attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1953-D 25¢ WDDR-001, this variety benefits from triple independent attribution.
