1953-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Medium spread on the upper-right leaf of the olive branch identifies this 1953-D Washington Quarter as DDR-002 in the VarietyVista catalog, with die markers UVC-0821 and DMR-005. The upper-right leaf group — nearest the eagle's talon — is where the hub misalignment registers most visibly, with the leaf curves providing fine detail against which the secondary impression is readable. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is early die state. Stage B is mid-die state, marked by a light die crack descending the eagle's right wing on the reverse and a separate die crack across the hair and forehead on the obverse, both at mid-die state simultaneously. Stage C is late die state, currently unconfirmed. The 1953-D Washington quarter was struck in 90% silver at Denver, and the absence of a mintmark on Philadelphia coinage means die-crack pattern is an especially clean attribution tool for D-mint examples. Collectors should focus first on the upper olive branch leaf spray, then verify staging by checking the wing and hairline die cracks under magnification.
