1953 (D) Washington Quarter - Over Mint Mark WOMM-001 / OMM-001

Description

OMM-001, which Wexler numbers WOMM-001, is an over mint mark on the 1953-D Washington quarter, written D/D/D/S by VarietyVista. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-601; Wexler writes it FS-25-1953D-601 (022.3). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records two extra D punches, both west of the primary D, and an S to the north (D/D/D West, West with S North). Obverse stage A has an east-west crack across the head and a light crack on the front of the bust; by obverse stage B the crack reaches into the field at both ends. Reverse stage A has a light crack along the edge of the left-side wing beside the N in UNITED and a light crack at the left-side wing tip; nothing is recorded for reverse stage B. John Bordner submitted stage A and Ken Potter stage B. CONECA lists it as OMM #1 and Breen as #4367. Wexler notes it was first listed as WRPM-002, that it seems not to match the OMM given in The RPM Book, and that early die state coins hint at a possible further S to the south. VarietyVista gives the reporter as unknown. Under UVC-821 and DMR-004, stage A has both sides early and stage B both sides middle. Stage C, late, shows a crack down the eagle's right wing, a crack across the bust, and a crack across the upper hair and forehead that reaches into the field.
