Description

Tracked by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-827 and DMR-007, the 1951-S RPM-006 Roosevelt Dime exhibits a triple-punched S mintmark — S/S/S Serif, Southeast — where three successive applications of the San Francisco mintmark punch left overlapping serif impressions displaced toward the southeast. Three die stages document the working die progression: Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B is mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C records late die state where both the reverse and obverse reached LDS. The triple repunching on this variety provides an unusually clear record of the engraver correcting mintmark placement across multiple punch attempts, with each successive S leaving its own serif trace that can be distinguished from the others under careful magnification. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, which debuted in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after his death. The 1951-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver composition — 90% silver and 10% copper — weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.91 mm. The S mintmark on Roosevelt Dimes of this period was hand-punched onto each working die individually, and the serif style of the S punch used at San Francisco during the early 1950s creates particularly diagnostic repunching signatures because the serif terminals provide sharp reference points for measuring displacement direction and magnitude between successive punch impressions.
