1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-219, DMR-006, this 1951 San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime carries a repunched mintmark with an S/S West orientation, where the initial S punch was positioned west (to the left) of the corrected final placement. Three die stages document the progression: Stage A (early die state), Stage B (mid-die state), and Stage C (late die state). Sharing the S/S West direction with RPM-003 (UVC-217), RPM-005 nonetheless represents a distinct die with its own unique die markers and stage characteristics, as each working die received a separately applied mintmark. The fifth cataloged RPM for the 1951-S date, this variety underscores how prolific repunching was at the San Francisco Mint during the early 1950s. Struck in 90% silver (0.900 fine), the 1951-S Roosevelt Dime carries John R. Sinnock's portrait design, introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin Roosevelt. The westward displacement of the secondary S is typically most visible in early die states, as progressive die wear tends to obscure the finer details of the original misplaced impression over time.
