1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-217, DMR-004, this 1951 San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime displays a repunched mintmark with an S/S West orientation, indicating the initial S punch was placed west (to the left) of the final corrected position. Three die stages are documented: Stage A (early die state), Stage B (mid-die state), and Stage C (late die state). The westward displacement creates a secondary S impression visible to the left of the primary mintmark, strongest in early die states before wear softens the evidence. The S/S West direction provides a specific diagnostic that separates RPM-003 from other repunched mintmarks cataloged for the 1951-S, including RPM-001, which lacks a documented directional shift of this type. Struck in 90% silver (0.900 fine), the 1951-S Roosevelt Dime was produced at the San Francisco facility, where each working die received a hand-applied S mintmark. John R. Sinnock's portrait of Franklin Roosevelt had been in production since 1946, and the series continued generating repunched mintmark varieties throughout the hand-punching era that lasted into the 1960s.
