1951-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006
Error
Description
The 1951-D Washington Quarter RPM-006 is cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-1861 and DMR-014. The mintmark displacement is D/D South, with the initial D punch placed to the north and the final mintmark repositioned southward, leaving a secondary northward impression visible above the primary mintmark. The Stage A early die state (EDS) is marked by a die gouge running through the upper Y of LIBERTY on the obverse — a distinctive marker that allows stage attribution when the mintmark repunch itself may be partially worn. An additional attribution detail is that the obverse die used on RPM-006 is designated ODV-006, the Thin Motto variety, in which the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST appear with noticeably thinner strokes than on standard 1951-D obverse dies. The 1951-D Washington Quarter is a 90% silver coin struck at the Denver Mint before the 1965 composition change to clad. The Thin Motto obverse designation (ODV-006) narrows the attribution field significantly, as not all 1951-D RPM varieties are paired with ODV-006, making the combination of Thin Motto and D/D South a useful rapid-screening criterion.
