1951-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1951-D Washington Quarter WDDR-001 is a dual variety that also carries the WRPM-008 D/D Tilted repunched mintmark designation. Struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint, the variety shows spread toward the center on QUARTER DOLLAR, AMERICA, and the branch ends, with additional doubling visible on the lower left leaves of the heraldic eagle's olive branch. This center-directed spread indicates the second hubbing was impressed with slightly different pressure or positioning, pushing design elements inward. The die marriage also exhibits a die crack running across the base of the bust on the obverse and a separate crack descending along the eagle's right wing on the reverse, documenting progressive fatigue in both dies. The tilted repunched D mintmark provides a second attribution point, as the initial mintmark punch was placed at an angle before being corrected to a more upright position. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design in its silver composition era offers variety collectors a combination of precious metal content and mechanical variety documentation that makes dual-attribution specimens like WDDR-001 particularly desirable.
