1951 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1951-D WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1951-D Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A close spread toward the center appears on LIBERTY, and slight Class VI extra thickness on the ribbon, the designer's initials, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse, a crack crosses the bust's base and an E/W crack lies in the hair. Strong NW/SE scratches cover the lower obverse and strong N/S scratches the upper obverse; E/W scratches cross the R in LIBERTY, and a few N/S scratches lie under IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse is a repunched mint mark variety, a D/D Tilted (Rotated), which the Wexler RPM files carry as 1951-D WRPM-009. On it, a crack follows the eagle's right wing; a strong scratch on the rim links the first S in STATES with AMERICA's last A; NE/SW scratches cross E PLURIBUS UNUM; and thin E/W scratches cross QUARTER DOLLAR, two of them notable ones over the Q in QUARTER. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
