1950-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Catalogued by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-205 and DMR-007, the 1950-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006 is a well-staged Roosevelt Silver Dime variety from the San Francisco Mint. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B, mid die state, carries two identifiers: die scratches running north-south on the reverse, and die scratches on the neck behind the ear on the obverse. Stage C, late die state, remains unconfirmed. The 1950-S Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver, as were all Roosevelts from the series' introduction in 1946 through 1964. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, and his initials JS appear at the base of Lincoln's neck — the same initials that briefly drew accusation of representing Soviet leader Joseph Stalin when the coin debuted. Repunched mintmarks on silver dimes are a classic variety category, and the San Francisco examples of the early 1950s carry the additional appeal of the mint's relatively lower mintages compared to Philadelphia and Denver production. The neck scratch marker in Stage B provides a useful obverse locator independent of the mintmark examination.
