1950-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-001 for the 1950 San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime, this doubled die obverse shows extra thickness on the date, designer's initials JS, and the IN GOD WE TRUST motto. The extra thickness diagnostic — rather than visible separation lines — indicates very close hub doubling where the offset was minimal but sufficient to produce measurably thicker design elements. Die stages are documented with codes UVC-768 and DMR-008: Stage A represents early die state, Stage B shows light die scratches running north-south behind the neck at mid-die state with the reverse also at mid-die state, and Stage C reaches late die state. The north-south scratches behind the neck in Stage B serve as a reliable progression marker for determining specimen die state. The 1950-S Roosevelt Dime belongs to the early silver era of the series, struck on 90% silver planchets before the 1965 composition change. As DDO-001 for this date and mint, it holds the primary position in the VarietyVista catalog for San Francisco doubled die obverses, and doubling on both date and designer's initials offers multiple diagnostic areas for attribution.
