1950-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-501, this VarietyVista-documented 1950-S Roosevelt Dime bears a remarkable S/Inverted S repunched mintmark. A recent re-evaluation determined the underlying mintmark was not a D as previously thought but an inverted S, making this the only known inverted S RPM on a Roosevelt Dime and still a scarce and very desirable variety. Die markers UVC-204 / DMR-006: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS; Stage D with reverse at VLDS and a light die crack in back of hair at VLDS. Designed by John R. Sinnock, struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper at 2.50 grams and 17.91 mm. The reclassification from OMM to inverted RPM demonstrates how careful re-examination can reclassify longstanding attributions, and the FS-501 listing ensures active collector pursuit.
