1938 (D) Buffalo Nickel - Over Mint Mark WOMM-004

Description

1938-D WOMM-004 is an over mint mark on the 1938-D Buffalo nickel, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as a D over S, with the S to the southeast (D/S Southeast). Wexler records two stages. Obverse Stage A has E/W scratches above the date. Obverse Stage B shows weak lathe scratches, circular in form, high on the back of the head around 11:00; Wexler adds that this scratch is probably also on Stage A coins, and stronger there. On Reverse Stage A, an NNE/SSW scratch runs through the middle of the E's lower opening in FIVE, NE scratches come out of the inside of the C in CENTS, and a gouge lies in the field below the E in CENTS, toward its left side. Reverse Stage B keeps the scratch at FIVE's E, the other Stage A markers are weaker, and the secondary mint mark is fainter, without the strong details of the S. Bill Wilson submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as RPM #8. Wexler notes it was first listed as WOMM-006 and was renumbered once WOMM-004 and WOMM-005 were found not to be true OMM varieties.
