1938 (D) Buffalo Nickel - Over Mint Mark WOMM-002 / OMM-002

Description

1938-D WOMM-002 is an over mint mark on the 1938-D Buffalo nickel, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as OMM-002. Both list it as FS-512 (Wexler writes it FS-05-1938D-512). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a D over an S. The diagonal curve of the S lies inside the D, the top left curve of the S shows just under the D's upper serif, and a small piece of the S's upper serif bulges out at the top right of the D. The obverse has nothing significant; on the reverse a strong die scratch starts at the second S of STATES, cuts across the lower part of the dot and ends at the O of OF. Lloyd Hanson submitted the coin, and CONECA lists it as OMM #2. VarietyVista, with the reporter unknown, describes the D/S as centered. Under its marker codes UVC-225 and DMR-010, an early stage A and a middle stage B are unconfirmed; at stage C reverse and obverse are in a late die state, and at stage D both are in a very late die state.
