1938 (D) Buffalo Nickel - Over Mint Mark WOMM-001 / OMM-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler team as WOMM-001 and by VarietyVista as OMM-001, and cross-referenced as CONECA OMM #1 and Cherrypickers number FS-05-1938D-511 (020.5), this is a D/D/D/S over mint mark on the 1938-D Buffalo nickel. VarietyVista gives the Cherrypickers number as FS-511. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties puts both secondary D punches to the south of the primary D. Above the primary D the S's upper curve shows, and inside it the S's diagonal curve. At stage A neither side has significant markers. At stage B the obverse has a weak die clash at the throat, and the reverse is in a late die state, with the southern secondary mint marks abraded away and die deterioration doubling showing on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Stage A came from Lloyd Hanson and stage B from George W. Powell, Jr. VarietyVista, with the reporter unknown, describes the mint mark as D/D/D/S South, Southeast. Under its marker codes UVC-224 and DMR-009, an early stage A and a middle stage B are unconfirmed; at stage C reverse and obverse are in a late die state, and at stage D both are in a very late die state.
