1950 (D) Franklin Half Dollar - Over Mint Mark WOMM-001

Description

1950-D WOMM-001 is an over mint mark on the 1950-D Franklin half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as a D over S (D/S). The obverse is a doubled die, listed in the Wexler files as 1950-D WDDO-001, with a clockwise (CW) spread on the date. From the bottom right of LIBERTY's E a scratch curves ESE, and parallel NW-to-SE scratches cross the lower part of the I in LIBERTY. On the reverse, under the E in STATES is a horizontal scratch, and the bell clapper has a scratch running SE off its lower right. From the base of PLURIBUS's B, parallel scratches run SSE through UNUM's M, and other parallel scratches run NNW from the tops of the I and the B in PLURIBUS. Brett L. Parrish submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as RPM #1, its Cherrypickers number is FS-50-1950D-501, and Potter lists it as VCR#1/POMM#1. Wexler's comments point out that CONECA does not accept it as an over mint mark, listing it instead as an RPM, a D/D South, and that the obverse doubled die is missing from CONECA's listings as well; Wexler leaves the call to the reader.
