1948-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Featuring an S/S South displacement using MMS-002 (Trumpet Tail) mintmark punch, this 1948-S Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-497 / DMR-007: Stage A with strong die scratches north-south on reverse at EDS and obverse at EDS; Stage B with reverse and obverse at EMDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The strong north-south reverse die scratches present from the earliest die state indicate surface damage was introduced before or during initial production. The Trumpet Tail designation (MMS-002) identifies a specific S punch variant with a flared terminal on the lower curve. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1948. The early-appearing scratches combined with the Trumpet Tail punch identification provide comprehensive diagnostic data beyond the primary RPM displacement direction.
