1948 (S) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

1948-S WRPM-004 is a repunched mint mark on the 1948-S Jefferson nickel, cataloged by the Wexler team. A secondary S lies south of the primary S (S/S South). On the obverse, a small die gouge sits under the star, and parallel NNW/SSE scratches lie just right of the upper queue. On the reverse, a small gouge (dot) sits halfway between MONTICELLO's C and E; a scratch heads SW off AMERICA's second A, from its bottom left; many NW/SE scratches lie between the third and fourth columns; and many NNW/SSE scratches sit inside the right arch and the short right window. Brian Ribar submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as RPM #6. Wexler's comments note that the original 1983 The RPM Book listed it as RPM #1, and that CONECA later deleted that listing and reassigned it as RPM #6. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
